Android beats iOS App downloads

The Android operating system is already a leader in application downloads total other reference point in the race to dominate the smartphone market, according to ABI Research.

The market research firm in Singapore, Android's office said iOS beat in the second quarter of this year with 44 percent of mobile application downloads delivered to Android devices, compared with 31 percent iOS gadgets will.

Android has grown much faster than earlier projections suggested ABI. In 2009, Google's operating system provided only 11 percent of the total application downloads. At that time, the firm projected that figure could grow to 23 percent in 2014. Instead of 2011 seems to be the year that Android made its move in IOS. As recently as August 2010, ABI reported that iOS still have a dominant 52 percent market mobile application downloads.

"The strategy of open source Android is the main factor in its success," says Lim Shiyang, a research associate at ABI. "Being a free platform has expanded the Android device installed base, which in turn has boosted growth in the number of third-party application stores and mobile operator platform."

According to ABI, based on Android install IOS exceeds by a margin of 2.4 to 1 around the world by 2016 will grow to 3 to 1.

Shiyang says the open source factor alone could be sufficient to explain the success of Android, but ABI also notes that the growth of iPhone shipments slowed in the mid-2011, it is likely that consumers decided to wait to buy a new iPhone until the next model (which we now know that the iPhone 4s) was released. While growth is slowing Apple, Android shipments increased 36 percent in the second quarter.

Of course, the outlook for the fourth quarter of 2011 could be very different, thanks to the October release of iPhone 4S, which has already broken sales records. And Apple users still download more applications for Android user, by a margin of 2 to 1, according to the ABI report.

"The policies of Apple's superior monetization attracted good developers within its ranks, creating a catalog of applications and a better customer experience," says Dan Shey ABI.

In the end, Apple and Android gain. ABI expects the global application downloads for 2011 to hit 29 billion total, a huge increase of 9 billion downloads in 2010. That's thanks to a total installed base smartphone is expected to grow 46 percent this year.
